Tips for Maintaining your Laptop

How to Prevent Over Heating of Your Laptop

Heat is the main cause for laptop failure. Laptops  must be used on a flat surface to insure proper air flow to CPU. When placed on a flat service, the CPU fan sucks dust in. the build up will clog and choke the air flow. The laptop will then begin to shut down or lock up or not start at all. All because of heat buildup. ( I believe this is by design.)

I have seen clogged heat exchangers cause motherboard warp, video chip and CPU failure. The clogs look like the dust bunnies you see under your bed. Not your?  O.K. mine then.

Like this!

This is a Major clog!

I have roamed the net for anything that would help cure this problem without costing an arm and leg. One morning  through half opened eyes I found the answer. The coffee filter. It has good air flow. With some masking tape and some scissors, I had a laptop filter. It reduces the dust flowing in so it reduces heat buildup. You can see when the filter needs changing and your system will last beyond one year.

Toshiba 5105-S501 WRONG MACHINE ERROR...
1. Pop in the CD.
2. Press F12 immediately upon seeing the Toshiba logo.
3. Select the CD to boot to CD.
4. It will prompt you to continue or quit, press F1 to continue.
5. It will give you the "Wrong Machine" error.
6. Type Q: at the DOS prompt to change to the Q: drive (a RAM drive setup by batch file).
7. Type CD\base to change to the base directory.
8. Type os (or os.bat) and press Enter. This will start ghosting the image to the computer.
9. When it is done with disc 1 it will prompt for disc 2 and then disc 3.
10. When it is done, eject the disk and press the key it says to continue.
11. It should reboot into the setup for XP

I found this suggestion on a forum. Might have been from a repair person wanting more business.  I don't recommend doing this, but it must have worked once.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Shutdown

My solution: Leaf Blower

I have a Toshiba A75-S125. It shuts down 2 minutes after I started Disk Defragmenter or Disk Cleanup. Compressed air can did not get much dust out of the laptop. I decided to use my leaf blower and it worked great!

Notes:
- have someone hold your laptop, else it’ll be blown away.
- turn on the blower for 10 seconds to let all the dust come out first (you don't want them get inside your laptop anyway).
- block your laptop fans so that they won’t spin (I used a small electric wire)

I will be posting more tips as I find them. If you have suggestions as to what to include, feel free to let me know at Laptop Willie.
